Useful Beliefs vs Limiting Beliefs and How You Can Get More Useful Beliefs

I thought it might be a good idea to talk about useful beliefs because there seems to be a lot of people focused on getting rid of limiting beliefs. And if you get rid of a limiting belief what are you gonna believe instead. That is until you can get to the place where you can use your beliefs instead of them using you.

The problem with beliefs is we tend to think they are true when the actuality is, we just make them up. Since beliefs are made up the likelihood that they are actually true is very, very low. And most people have a mild obsession with… the truth or knowing the truth. At least where others are concerned, because they think the truth is what’s right and of course there is that ole’ belief ‘right makes might’ or at a minimum safety. You will know the truth; the truth will set you free, right?

And as my Grampa Vetter would ask, “How’s that working for ya?”

Curiosity asks which specific truth do I need to know and freedom from what and to what?

Regardless of truth (your truth, my truth, the truth), it seems people are happier with results so the question we get to ask ourselves is would I rather be right or be happy? Happy is way less concerned about concepts of ‘it’s true’ or being right and more focused on what seems to work and the results you get.

What is a belief? It is a thought you’ve thought long enough to believe it is more than a thought.

We don’t realize beliefs are not true and that they are made up because we have forgotten or were never told about the 1st Forgotten Fundamental of an Exquisite Life.

“The Individual is the Meaning Maker.” Nothing means anything to you until you add the meaning. You don’t have to believe anything and yet whatever you do believe will become your perceived and felt reality.

When something becomes your perceived and felt reality you believe it is true, forgetting that you added the meaning in the first place.

The best example and we have all experienced it; as a child when your parents or an adult told you ‘not to play in the street’ they had to tell you that over and over and over again… UNTIL… you made the meaning for yourself ‘not to play in the street’. Once you made the meaning no one needed to tell you ever again.

Since you want to be happy and you have taken on other’s beliefs without question, if you really want to be happy it is time to start questioning your beliefs not so much to judge them and more to see how useful they are and how to have more useful beliefs.

Right now you don’t know what beliefs you have, why you have them or how to get more useful beliefs. If you want to change that click here and subscribe to the DocResults YouTube Channel and you’ll be notified as we add more videos in this series.

Dr. Houston:

You may not remember us, Walt and Barbara Kogut, we met years ago. Walt has recently suffered Endocarditis and had to have open heart surgery. He suffers from Aphasia. I listed to your video and realized what you said about “children playing in the street” was appropriate for someone who has a traumatic brain injury. It was very helpful. I have a new approach to help Walt recover. I used the analogy with him and he completely understood.

Next is the idea of perception is reality. If we can get Walt to understand that his perception is not necessarily the reality of the situation. We may be home free.

Thanks.
