The Best Place To StartThere are so many different ways to help yourself and others get the life that you want, so the question of out of all the places to improve what’s the best place to start can be very educational and enlightening. Let’s explore together some of the possibilities and as you read this article feel the delight of  having the life you want as a real possibility. I reveal a secret key near the end of the article.

One place and usually the first place people want to change for the better is the level of behavior. How people act. When was the last time you thought or said…

“If they would only do this or act this way then everything would be OK.”

It could have been in reference to a relationship, a spouse, a loved one, a job, the government, politics or anything. What we are basically saying is if and when you “change your behavior” so I feel better everything will be OK.

Behavior modification became a well known topic through the work of Ivan Pavlov. The famous experiment where Pavlov rang a bell every time food was given to a dog and after a while the dog would salivate when the bell was rung even if there was no food.

Another not so well known behavior modification technique that works the same way is when you go to the dentist and they give you the shot to numb your mouth. The doctor usually sticks his finger in your mouth pulls up on your cheek and shakes it back and forth and that area of your mouth and jaw get numb. The interesting thing is if you do the same action of putting your finger in your mouth, pull up on your cheek and shake it back and forth, that are if your mouth will start to become numb even with out a shot.

Often we think that if others change their behavior then we will feel better not realizing that modifying someone else’s behavior still does not improve us or them it only hides and ignores the real area that could make all the difference in the world.

Out of all the places to improve another place people often go in an effort to change, modify and/or improve their behavior is on the level of beliefs and values. This is the place most professionals and self improvement programs and systems operate.

This level of change and improvement can and does change behavior as beliefs and values control and determine actions and behaviors. Most therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, energy workers, healers, spiritual workers, psychics and self help teachers work in this place and level of improvement even if they are not aware of what area they are working in.

The most effective facilitators of change usually determine what outcome someone wants. Then determines what behaviors are needed to get the outcome. Then understand what beliefs must be there to produce the behaviors and actions that get the outcome. Then what values are needed to strengthen the beliefs. Once those are figured out then the facilitator helps the person to take on the beliefs and values needed to produce the actions and behaviors to get the outcome that was originally determined.

The chain of command looks like this…

Values > Beliefs > Behavior > Outcome

Outcome – what you get is controlled by your behaviors and action and those are controlled by your beliefs which are controlled by your values. The interesting thing is the higher up you work the easier it is to shift everything below. That is why so many professionals and people who just want to help discover that working to be able to change beliefs and values is so much easier than trying to modify someone’s behaviors. Change someone’s beliefs or values automatically changes their behavior.

And when you change your own beliefs and/or values you wind up interpreting others behaviors, actions and words totally different than before.

And the meaning you give to what others thinks, say or do is the number one SECRET KEY to you getting what it is you want in life, period.

Now there is another place that gets amazingly fast improvement almost no one every start or even goes to the place. Since we know that outcomes (results) are controlled by behavior and behavior are controlled by beliefs and beliefs are controlled by values, what are values and therefore beliefs, behaviors, action and outcomes controlled by?

The one thing ALL of the others are controlled by and the most effective place to start and also the easiest is the place of…


Identity determines your values, your beliefs, your behaviors, your actions and your results. Your Identity determines everything you get or don’t get and how you respond to everything.

So of all the places to improve what is the best place to start… I’d start with the end in mind, how you identify yourself and if you shift this one area not only can you help yourself you can help everyone around you because your identity determines everything, how you perceive, react, respond and what you do.

The experiment you refer to on the ‘conditioned reflex’ of dogs was originally carried out by the Russian Physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov in 1901(not by B.F.Skinner, 1904-1990).
