Don’t Take Responsibility For Your Past Actions

by Houston Vetter - DocResults on November 3,

I have heard all my life you need to take responsibility for your actions. I’m gonna say right here, “Don’t take responsibility for your past actions.” Usually when others want you to take responsibility for your actions there seems to be the sense that where you are is not right, not good or wrong. And that if you don’t take responsibility for where you are and how you got there you are somehow wrong.

I want to suggest the opposite. Where you are is where you are. How you got there or why you got there really truly don’t matter. It’s all a made up story anyway. As one teacher said we usually think we know everything, when we hardly know anything at all. When we focus on taking responsibility for where we are we send our attention into the past. When our attention goes into the past judgments form and judgments do not get us closer to whatever it is we want to be, do or have.

In a group of people I made the comment that I am whatever another needs me to be… I said, “I am whatever the other needs me to be, problem, solution, friend, enemy, lover, hater, wise, stupid, caring, etc.” As these are all perceptions and not accurate about anyone. But I am whatever one happens to perceive me as both angel and devil, sinner and saint.”

And someone responded by saying, “That kind of absolves one of all responsibility for their actions. ‘It’s not what I do, it’s how you perceive it.'”

That’s one way to look at things when one chooses to come from a fault and blame frame of reference, when you come from a solutions frame there is no blame or quilt about anything. One of our biggest problems is attempting to make people take responsibility for where they are instead of where they want to be. Where you are is where you are. How and why you are where you are really doesn’t matter because you are where you are. All that really matters is where do you want to be because you can get anywhere from anywhere. Responsibility for actions only to the point of calibrating where one wants to be, do or have.

The attempt to make one take responsibility in other words to take blame, feel guilty or at fault does nothing for being successful or getting the results you want.

Focusing on not repeating something so you don’t wind up in the same place only causes you to wind up in the same place.

Energy flows, builds, charges where attention goes, PERIOD!

If you focus on being responsible for where you are, you add way to much charge and focus of energy. Encourage others to be responsible for where they want to go and you are encouraging calibration over judgment. And trust me every great teacher has warned about the pit falls of judgment and yet it seems most don’t get it.

Responsibility as I wrote in my earlier books means RE-do over ABILITY-Power to SPOND(E) a Greek musical term meaning to liberate. Responsibility is the power to once again liberate and most people use it focused on the past which subjugates instead of liberates. Where you are and the actions you have taken are ALL in the past. Liberation come from where you are going not from where you’ve been.

Don’t take responsibility for your past actions it only creates judgments. Take responsibility for where you want to go. This creates calibration and allows you to make adjustments as you move toward what you want. That is the power to once again liberate yourself.

One of the best ways to accomplish this is with the Aligning Process

I have not heard it put that way before, but it makes total sense. I always believed in taking responsibility, “Yes, I allowed this to happen, now what should I do to avoid that,” was my belief. Thank you for sharing this new insight, I understand this perfectly.

The clearer we get internally the better and more fun our lives will be and others will have an example they can use to help themselves.

To Your Best,
Doc Houston
